Portland Pickins’

Last week Mr. Ed and I traveled to Portland, Oregon for a visit with granddaughter Kate who lives there, and my daughter Sandra (Kate’s Mother)  who was visiting from Montana.  Given the evil driving conditions between Western Washington and Montana during the winter months we take advantage of any chance to see Sandra when she’s on “our side” of the mountain passes.  We had a lovely visit with Kate and Sandra as well as getting a chance to see cousin Nancy and her husband Jerry, and of course we all know that no trip is complete without a visit to the local repositories! My grandparents on my dad’s side, Robert and Susan Shane lived in the area prior to 1920 so there was fertile soil to till for genealogy/family history information and till it we did.

So on Wednesday we took ourselves off  to the Oregon State Archives in Salem, the Washington County Courthouse in Hillsboro/Beaverton and Mount Calvary Cemetery also in Hillsboro.  And last but not least drove down Farmington Road where the Shane’s farm was located and also saw the church they attended after they moved into Portland proper, and located the address where their Portland home was located.  Unfortunately the lot where the home was is now a used car lot. That was kind of a downer, but I guess it’s to be expected since they’ve been gone close to 100 years now.  So over the next few days I’ll be posting information gathered on the trip, and also some recently located data on James Shane and his family.

Please check back in a day or two and the Shane information will be much more complete.
