Here is the obituary for Carol Irene Smith, daughter of Elsie (Walker) Everest and Ralph Marshall Everest. Carol died September 13, 2007.
Carol Irene Smith of Cathlamet left for heaven on September 13, 2007. She was 91.
She was born in Bemidji, Minn., May 24, 1916 to Ralph Marshall and Elsie May (Walker) Everest. She came to Wahkiakum County in 1926 at the age of 10 and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1934.
She was married to Kristian Peary Pedersen on April 21, 1935, until he passed away on Dec. 25, 1967 and spent many years in Alaska fishing with him on his boat named the “Carol Irene,” based out of Cordova, Alaska. During those years together, they had five children, and took in three foster boys: Ralph Zwiegel, Bob Davis & Ron Horman.
She then went to work at a halfway house, operated by Reverend Marr, in Seattle for three years (starting on May 12, 1968) befoe moving back to Cathlamet in 1971.
She married Donald Patrick Smith on December 31, 1971 at the Hotel Cathlamet, and was married to him until his death, Oct. 30, 2001.
She and husband, Don, worked together at Jim’s Cafe in Cathlamet, operated the Hotel Cathlamet, where they also lived and then left for Alaska, where they became cooks for the Alaskan Logger’s Association in and around Ketchikan and Juneau, Alaska. She retired from there in 1981.
She is survived by her sons: Ralph B. Pedersen of Cathlamet, WA; Frank D. Pedersen of Castle Rock, WA and Marshall L. Pedersen of Moorestown, New Jersey; daughter Kay L. Chamberlain of Skamokawa, WA; stepsons: Donald Smith, Jr. of Wrangell, Alaska; Kenneth Smith of Castle Rock, WA; and Lonney Kubacki of Longview, WA; a brother, Ralph Marshall Everest Jr. of Canandaigua, NY; a sister Marian (Everest, Healy) Vik of Longview, WA; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, many step grand and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Krist and Don; a brother, George Everest and a son, David W. Pedersen.
A “Celebration of Life” service will be held on October 14 at the River of Life Assembly of God Church in Cathlamet at 12:30 P.M.
